Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi has sanctioned the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kathua to Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural sciences & Technology of Jammu in the year, 2008 vide No: F.No. 5(37)97-AE-11 dated 7th January, 2008. Krishi Vigyan Kendra, is the district level Farm Science Centres, established by Indian Council of agricultural Research for speedy transfer of technology to farmer’s fields. "The farmer is not only an important guest to the Krishi Vigyan Kendra.
He is real owner who has given us an oppurtunity to serve him"
The KVKs aim is to increase the productivity on sustainable basis and creating opportunity for greater economic activities in agriculture and allied sector. KVKs identify the technological needs of the farming community and endeavour to meet these needs through multifarious activities like organization of training programmes , demonstrations , technology assessment and refingnment, agricultural exhibitions , field days, campaigns and publication of easy to understand literature in local languages . In order to achieve this goal, following four mandates have been envisaged in the design of Krishi Vigyan Kendras:
•To organize short and long-term vocational training courses in agriculture and allied vocations for the farmers and rural youths with emphasis on “ Learning by doing” for higher production on farms and generating self employment;

•To organize training to update the Extension Personnel with emerging advances in agriculture research on regular basis;

•To conduct “ On –farm testing” for identify technologies in term of location specific sustainable land use systems;

•To organize front-line demonstrations on various crops to generate production data and feedback information.


THRUST AREAS:
1. Crop Diversification with pulses, oil seed & vegetable crops.
2. Promotion of year round cultivation of mushrooms.
3. Popularization of new varieties of cereals, pulses and vegetable crops.
4. Resource conservation technology.
5. Integrated Disease & Pest management in crops.
6. Integrated Nutrient Management in crops.
7. Management of Dairy cattle with emphasis on Deworming & vaccination schedule.
8. Entrepreneurship development among rural youth through formation of self help groups.
9. Value addition of seasonal fruits and vegetables.
