Kathua district is located in the extreme south of the Jammu and Kashmir state. It is one of the most strategically placed districts as it provides only road and rail link to the rest of the country. Kathua district, the gateway of J&K lies between 320 -17' to 320-55'. North latitude and 750-7' to 760-17', East longitude. The district is bound in the south by Gurdaspur district of the Punjab, in the east by Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh and in the North by Doda, Samba, and Udhampur district of J&K State. The district comprises of five tehsils viz. Kathua, Hiranagar, Basohli, Billawar and Bani. The total geographical area of the district is 2651sqkms. The soil of district Kathua varies between alluvial sandy loam in plains of Hiranagar and Kathua to gravel in the Kandi Area of the district. The climate varies widely over the district ranging from subtropical in the command blocks viz. Barnoti, Ghagwal, Hiranagar and Kathua to temperate in the blocks of Bani and Lohai Malhar, whereas Basohli and Billawar blocks are in intermediate zone. Thus, there is potential of growing wide range of agricultural and horticultural crops year round. It is hot during April to June and severe cold during December to January. The district gets maximum rainfall during the month of July to August. The average annual rainfall of district ranges between 1420 - 1570 mm. The total cropped area in the district is1.29 lakh ha. with merely 33.16% gross irrigated area. The principal crops of the district are wheat, rice and maize. The traditional language of Kathua is Dogri. The Pahari language is prevalent in the mountainous area of the district. The literacy rate of the district is 65.60 percent.
